This essay discusses the nexus between urbanization, demography and social history in the cities of the Roman Empire. Some recent trends in the debate are presented and strenghts and weaknesses thereof are pondered. The historiographic roots of such debates are traced back to the seminal work by K. Hopkins, and an effort is made to follow the threads that originated from it.
